From the moment Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made their relationship official, all eyes were on the happy couple and the attention hasn’t slowed down. In a recent interview, the Duchess of Sussex admitted she was warned that marrying Harry would “destroy” her life.

Prince Harry and Markle appeared in a documentary that follows the couple throughout their 10-day tour of Africa. In it, they opened up about their private life and the scrutiny they face from British media. The couple was especially candid about the relentless coverage of their son Archie, who was born in May.

In one scene, Markle admitted that not everyone was thrilled for her when she started dating.

“I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand here, but when I first met my now-husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy,” Markle said. “But my British friend said to me, 'I'm sure he's great, but you shouldn't do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.'”

Markle reflected on how the comment was confusing at that time and she simply brushed it aside. She tried to prepare herself for life as a Royal, but said the constant attention, harassment and criticism was harder than she expected.

"I've said for a long time to H—that's what I call him—'It is not enough to just survive something, right?’" she said. "That's not the point of life. You've got to thrive; you’ve got to feel happy… I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought that it would be fair and that's the part that's really hard to reconcile."

Fortunately, the couple has built in some downtime away from the spotlight. According to reports, they will be taking a six-week sabbatical and travel to the United States so Archie can spend his first Thanksgiving with Markle’s mother.
